The Confident Lion Has Power, Stability, and Patience
Lions are most active at night and live in a variety of habitats but prefer grassland, savanna, dense scrub, and open woodland. As the only social feline species, lions live in large groups called prides that consist of multiple females, their cubs, and two or three male lions in a territory averaging 100 square miles. It is the male’s sole job to protect the pride and their territory. He does this by scent marking, scratching, and caroling, this is a form of roar that can be heard up to 5 miles away. Lions are highly territorial and occupy the same area for generations. Females actively defend their territories against other females, while resident males protect prides from rival coalitions. Territory size depends on prey abundance, as well as access to water and denning sites. Historically, they ranged across much of Europe, Asia, and Africa, but now they are found mainly in parts of Africa south of the Sahara. Lions are symbols of royalty, strength and courage and have been celebrated throughout history for these characteristics.
