The Koala is Not a Bear
Koalas are well-known for sleeping for up to 20 hours a day and spend much of their waking hours perched in trees. They are an iconic symbol of Australia and are beloved for their cute and cuddly appearance. However, they are classified as a vulnerable species due to habitat loss, disease, and other threats to their survival. Devastating drought and brushfires during the late 2010s also contributed to the decline in the number of koalas, reducing the total by an additional 30 percent between 2018 and 2021.
